The City of Knoxville Plans Review and Inspections Department will be hosting two public meetings highlighting significant changes to the 2024 I-Codes and 2023 NEC.
These meetings will be held at the City of Knoxville Public Works conference room. Seating is first come first served. The conference room seats 40-50 with plenty of standing room available.
Topics for discussion will be a presentation on the significant updates for the 2024 I-Codes and 2023 NEC followed up by some Q&A.
Note the cost study primarily covers items related to new construction and does not cover energy. The final publication of the 2024 IECC (and IRC Chapter 11 requirements) were delayed due to the appeal of provisions tied to electrification and is still pending. Home Innovation is working on a cost study for the 2024 IECC that will be available later this year. NAHB is also putting together a study of new IRC existing building appendix provisions related to additions and substantial alterations.
We have attached their lists of significant changes for the IRC and IBC (plus related codes) and recommended amendments for everything other than energy code requirements (2024 IECC and 2024 IRC Chapter 11).
The cost studies suggest the 2024 IRC may represent a savings for new construction particularly due to NAHB successfully obtaining a rollback of an unnecessary slab vapor retarder change from 2021. There may be additional costs for remodeling if a state or community adopts the existing building appendix (formerly Appendix AJ, now Appendix BO).
